From the 1800s to the Present Day
This is a must have book for anyone interested in the history of Henfield. Dive into over a century and a half of Henfield history. Tobitts, Mussons, Baker's the butchers, Baigents the builders - just a few of the best known names from the High Street to be found within...
The inspiration for producing the book came from three articles on the history of the High Street going back into the 1800s, written by John Challen for the Parish Magazine in 1921. Challen was born in Henfield in 1848 and died a year after the articles' publication.
Alan Barwick, the curator at Henfield Museum, has expanded on what John Challen wrote and brought the history of the High Street right up to the present day. The A5 book of over 18,000 words has 104 pages, and is illustrated with 107 photographs; a mixture of colour and black and white.
Produced by the Friends of Henfield Museum, the book is priced at £10 - if when selecting this book you opt to also purchase a copy of the book A Tour of Our Commons, normally priced at £7, you can buy both for £15.
